Q: I would like to request further information regarding whether NZF uses Zakat to pay Al-‘Amilina ‘Alayha: Administrators of Zakat I had read previously how NZF distributes Zakat in this country but what about this group and in fact which groups can you/do you not pay to. Please do not take this the wrong way. I am not against payment of Zakat to administrators it but it would be a useful and responsible clarification to explain on whether this group is paid and how

A: NZF does not use Amileen Alayha as a category. Our policy is as follows: we endeavour to cover all our costs with non-Zakat funds, for example Gift Aid, Sadaqah and interest contributions. However, because we have sometimes found ourselves in a position where our non-Zakat income has been insufficient to operate the organisation at the desired level of quality and efficiency, we consulted senior UK scholars (including the Al-Qalam Shariah Panel that specialises in Zakat and financial matters) who approved us to utilise a portion of Zakat funds if required. In fact, they allowed us to use up to 12.5% of Zakat for administrative reasons, but we decided to limit ourselves to a MAXIMUM of 10%. So in the last few years it has actually been around 6.5-7% on average. This money is then specifically restricted towards the salaries of caseworkers who administer the rest of Zakat, ensuring that it is done in a valid way but also in a responsible way, checking each case in detail so that the Zakat can have the most transformative effect as possible. Based on our consultation, policy and activity, you can rest assured that 100% of the Zakat that you entrust to NZF will meet the requirements for validity but also know that up to £1 of every £10 will ensure that that the £9 or so will have the maximum possible impact. After all, Allah Himself allows Zakat to be used towards the administrators of Zakat in Chapter 9, Verse 60 of the Qur'an! I hope this satisfies you and I hope that you will continue to feel confident in entrusting your Zakat to NZF going forward. Please feel free to pass this on to your family or friends if it helps.

And Allah knows best!
